Never have been one to watch a lot of TV but I got pretty sick a few weeks back and then we had the crazy Polar Vortex so while I was resting and staying in the house I rejoined Netflix to take in Breaking Bad to see what all of the chatter was about.

The Mrs. and I finished watching a couple of nights ago, but the fact that it is still in my head is a good indication of how good it is and I thought I’d pen a few thoughts before I start working today.

General Comments…

Interesting series.  Had enough cancer in my family to have given serious thought as to what I would do if I was diagnosed and I can understand Walter’s desire to want to do something good for his family before he “shuffled off this mortal coil.”  Couple that with his intellect, skills and recognizing a viable, although illegal, way to accomplish his goal and I can definitely sympathize with the guy.

Of course, with his first murder, albeit in essentially a pre-self-defense kind of way, things definitely ratchet up to a whole new level and right quick.

I used to think that most people would turn bad given the right situation but I am not entirely convinced of that anymore.  In Walt’s case though, it was fascinating to watch his total conversion from high school Chemistry teacher to meth-lab king.  I was glad he finally admitted in the end that he did it for himself.  I wish more people could be that honest.

Great idea for a series which was “how about we plan on changing the character all along instead of keeping him the same to keep the series going?”

How Good Is It?

Average: 8 out of 10 with Sopranos Season 2 being a 10.  Breaking Bad definitely got better and better each season.

Favorite Lines

When the going gets tough, you don’t want a criminal lawyer. You want a criminal lawyer. Know what I’m saying?

Now, say my name.

“If that’s true…if you don’t know who I am, then maybe your best course…would be to tread lightly.”

Bryan Cranston delivers this line in perhaps the most nuanced way I’ve ever heard a line spoken. 75% statement of fact, 20% “please let’s not go here”, 2% threat and, like when wine is in the barrel, 3% The Angels’ Share.
The series is addicting…like Crystal Meth
The only two things I really know about Crystal Meth are that it is a bad illegal drug and it is very addicting.  Well, so is this show.  It goes easy on you in the beginning but after a while you really can’t stop watching.
